No matter what industry you’re in, creating an engaging and motivating culture almost always boosts business performance. The question of how to achieve that is one that divides opinion, time and again.

Recently, I was chatting about this very subject with a former colleague of mine. “It’s all about CEO’s seeing the value of HR administration, and the best way to achieve this is through tech,” he said. Personally, I had to disagree. To me this is purely a paper trail exercise and one, which can be perceived as overly procedural.

I’m not saying we should do away with technological advances – HR systems and software have their place. It’s just that I think there’s a smarter way to get the most from them. HR should be using technology to complement the work they do rather than using technology for technology’s sake. We should be making our systems drive towards achieving our people strategy and business goals, adding value through people insights and analytics and removing bureaucratic processes.

Don’t get me wrong there are legal obligations relating to contracts and terms and conditions etc., which every business has to remain mindful of. However the approach to meeting such legal requirements should not be to the detriment of promoting a culture of engagement, which recognises the value of people performance. A new KPMG international report which surveyed 375 executives, Evidence-based HR, supports this view. It calls for a “new-breed” of HR practitioner, one that is “more numerically proficient” and able to combine “analytical acumen” with “always-crucial human insight”.

Bring in people professionals to facilitate HR transformation. This will help HR focus their minds on the needs of the business as a whole rather than just the HR department. It’s the best way to ensure resource and budget is allocated where it is most impactful on culture and company performance – something we can all agree is in everyone’s interest!
